Pinch grip, power grip and wrist twisting strengths of healthy older adults
نویسنده
چکیده
Knowledge of hand function capabilities of older adults is useful to hand therapists, designers of hand prostheses, and designers of food and medication packaging. Muscular strength decreases with age1,2 and a reduction in hand strength can affect the capacity to carry out activities of daily living (ADLs), thus influencing the quality of life. In addition to the natural ageing processes, various diseases compound problems in carrying out the ADLs. For example, rheumatic diseases may cause the hand to become deformed, making gripping difficult. Rantanen et al.3 conducted a 25-year prospective study involving healthy males aged between 45 to 68 years and observed that reduction in handgrip strength, during the study period, correlated significantly to functional limitations and disability. Giampaoli et al.4 followed 140 males aged between 71 and 91 years for four years and observed that the incidence of disability increased with decreasing grip strength. Disability was defined as needing help in performing various ADLs5 and instrumental ADLs6.

Background and Aim: Measuring the hand's grip strength and comparing it with its normative data is a valid method for detecting intensity of the numerous damages of hand. In addition, co mparing grip strength of people in different regions can reveal hidden facts resulting from genetic and environmental factors . Therefore , the present study was carried out with the aim of comparing grip str...

BACKGROUND Measuring and comparing grip and pinch strengths with their normative data is a valid method to detect intensity of the numerous damages of hand. This research was carried out with the aim of establishing normative data of grip strength and three types of pinch strengths (Tip, Key and Palmar) in healthy Iranian adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the study population was...
متن کاملThe Effects of Visuomotor Training Using Pablo System on Hand Grip Strength and Wrist Movements in Adults and Elderly
Objectives: The primary study objective was to assess the effects of visuomotor training on grip strength and wrist movements in adults and the elderly to be efficiently used in rehabilitation. The secondary objective was to compare the post-training changes between the two groups. Methods: This was a pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental study, including healthy individuals aged 25-44 (adults...
متن کاملEffect of Grip Type, Wrist Motion, and Resistance Level on Pressures within the Carpal Tunnel of Normal Wrists
Elevated carpal tunnel pressure (CTP) has been associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. This study systematically evaluated the effect of wrist motion resistance and grip type on CTP during wrist motion typical of occupational tasks. CTP during four wrist motion patterns, with and without resistance, and with and without gripping, was measured in vivo in 14 healthy individuals. CTP measured duri...
متن کاملEffects of grip type and wrist posture on forearm EMG activity, endurance time and movement accuracy
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), especially those of the upper limb are a common concern in modern industry, and physical risk factors such as force and posture are linked to their causation. The effects of the combination of forceful gripping or grasping (especially pinch grips) and awkward postures should be considered in the causation of MSDs. Current guidelines recommend that wherever poss...
